When I was 18, (1967) the democratic militants against the dictatorship of Salazar heralded the example of Egas Moniz as a national hero mistreated by the fascist regime. The image of Egas Moniz had been appropriated by the democrats trying to show that the highest exponents of culture, art and science, were supporters of the democratic camp. It stroked me deeply and I promised my self to do something in order to understand how could it be possible. Following the political description I figured an isolated scientist developing a hard work in an unfavourable environment. His successful work increased my curiosity. In spite of all the difficulties he had reached, the main goal that every scientist could aspire: to see his work recognized and applauded all around the world.
